Social app IRL to shut down after 95 of its users turn out to be bots

Social messaging app IRL is shutting down after an investigation concluded that 95% of its 20 million users were "automated or from bots", a company spokesperson said. The SoftBank-backed startup will also return capital to shareholders. Founded by Abraham Shafi in 2017, California-based IRL has raised $200 million to date and reached unicorn status with $1.17 billion valuation in 2021.
